The meaning of tools, the electronic bureaucracy and the world of work.

A machine was anything that extended the usefulnes of human body. A pair of plier for fingers, hammer for fist and so on.

As machines became more elaborate, what was called machines started to be called tools. Combining machines and tools we got robot. (but that is another story)

Because of the shallownes of knowledge of people who work with computers and IT, -this shallowness that must have something to do with how their brains get 'wired' as they develop capabilities to work with digits- they can't name new things and they go and use old names for new things. Or theirs are the typs of brains that are not strong in language capabilities. Same thing with particle physicists who are not able to find names things

The computers and IT people use the name tools for any application that enables a process to accomplished.

(quotation marks denotes borrowed names)

Today a tool, is a computer screen operated by a guy with a the brain capabilities of a chimpanze. It is a "window" with a few "radio buttons", a few pull down "menus" that you may already have used to book a hotel or a flight in the Internet.

The invention of the "tool" has had two major effects:
It allowed the keyboard job to be exceuted remotely as in outsourcing.
Second and MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL: it created the electronic bureaucracy

Note that the word bureaucracy means control by the office.

The electronic bureaucracy is the same bureaucracy that existed before only that instead of having mindless people shuffling papers we have today mindless people shuffling "tools".

If you start applying the concept of using "tools" in the finance business it will become too complicated :-)
