Homicide rate is somewhat misleading. In the US it varies tremendously, depending on where you live. Greece, for example, has a tiny murder rate but its automobile accident rate is much higher than the US. So, it is not safer than the US, unless you live on an island with few cars around. My town in the US has a murder rate lower than West and Central Europe.
