Hi Albert,

Sorry, I used Phase 1 and Round 1 interchangeably. I mean the initial deployment by either one of those terms. I am sure you have read about the RFP that was put out by 4 RBOCs in July (Ameritech, BellSouth, Pacific Bell, SBC) for 60,000 lines. I consider that RFP to be part of Phase 1 or Round 1. Anyhow, my focus here is the '97 deployment and not '98. DMT should definitely be ready for '98 deployment otherwise they shouldn't even bother.

Dataquest estimates for xDSL lines by the year 2000:

global = 6.25 million
US only = 3.7 million

With my calculation, US by 2000 is a lot more than 1/3. The balance may change as we go further into the future.

Remember that the bulk of the world doesn't have copper lines and would most likely not install new ones. Wherever there is no copper lines, I would think they would install either fiber, HFC or just go wireless.
