The statistics may be true, but it does not feel that way. I commute in Boston and the traffic is as bad or worse from my perception. There are traffic jams at 9:30-10am.

A lot of companies have cut telecommuting allowances and benefits which leads to increased traffic. Also people are trying to be in office instead of telecommuting in fear of layoffs.
