IDC: Microprocessor shipments down in 1Q

(AP:SAN MATEO, Calif.) The research firm IDC says worldwide PC microprocessor shipments fell "significantly" in the first quarter from the fourth quarter.

IDC said Tuesday that while the decline was "slightly more than typically occurs between fourth quarter and first quarter," the market's decline is slowing.

Worldwide PC processor unit shipments declined 10.9 percent sequentially. Year-over-year, shipments declined 13 percent.

Intel Corp. owns the bulk of the world's PC microprocessor market, and rival Advanced Micro Devices Inc. owns much of the rest. During the first quarter, Intel earned a 77.3 percent market share of all microprocessor units shipped, a loss of 4.7 percent. AMD, meanwhile, earned 22.3 percent, a gain of 4.6 percent.

IDC says it expects modest sequential processor unit shipment decline in the second quarter.
