Steve,

The attenuation on copper is exponential w/increasing frequency
and range. So at some point, neither DMT nor CAP will cut it.
The results from comparing DMT to CAP in real world conditions
are not in as far as I know (although rumor from GTE trials,
where all copper was upgraded first, was that CAP and DMT were
comparable for downstream, but DMT was significantly better up.)
I think that about 85% of all US households are w/in ADSL range.
I don't know the number than are in DMT versus CAP range. If
DMT is, on average about 5x the upstream speed of CAP, then
it probably has about 2x the range. This might translate into
10% of the households that can be reached by DMT that can't be
reached by CAP. Is it economic? Depends on the cost difference.
If DMT chipsets are $70-80 next year, how can CAP be alot cheaper
next year?
