PITTSBURGH--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 27, 1997--
Expands Highly Demanded Services to 52 Countries Through Vendor
Partnership, Offers Wide Bandwidth at Significant Cost Savings
Westinghouse Communications Monday announced that it has joined forces with Infonet Services Corp. to enhance its telecom/datacom services and network management expertise and will extend its customer base in 52 countries throughout Europe, Asia and South America.
The alliance, coupled with other ongoing worldwide strategic partnerships, will allow Westinghouse Communications to offer its full range of services -- LAN Dial Remote Access (LDRA), Frame Relay, X.25, videoconferencing, and voice services -- worldwide, while maintaining its single point-of-contact philosophy.
Westinghouse Communications provides network services with an emphasis on single point-of-contact Project Management-lead focus. The benefit to the end user is the ability to place one call ... to one person ... one time for problem resolution. Both Infonet and Westinghouse have standardized on the Nortel Magellan Switching platform, providing additional synergy for users and a multi-media class of switch -- which means it can handle voice, data and video on the same platform.
By deploying the end-to-end Nortel Magellan platform, Westinghouse delivers the performance, consistency, and reliability of a single frame relay network. The common network architecture enables maximum performance for frame relay customers by reducing interoperability and traffic management issues.
Standardizing on the Nortel Magellan will provide comprehensive network management capabilities worldwide and will position Frame Relay customers for future growth and migration. In addition, dial-up services will be offered internationally. End-users can connect to their home office via the Westinghouse Frame Relay network from branch offices or other sites worldwide.
The Westinghouse Frame Relay network will be linked to Infonet Services Corp. through a high-level Network-to-Network Interface (NNI). Robert Moon, director of management Information Systems for MICROS Inc., the world's largest producer of point-of-sale terminals for the hospitality industry, recently chose Westinghouse's Frame Relay Service for his company's domestic and international communications needs.
He has been well satisfied with its benefits. "The dynamic bandwidth sharing feature of the Frame Relay Service allows us the capability of sending large bursts of data through the network without having to reserve large amounts of network bandwidth.
"Moreover, the service has a single network interface from the MICROS headquarters location that supports multiple links to other locations through the use of Permanent Virtual Circuits (PVCs). This translates into considerable savings, since access circuits, equipment and related fees can amount to 40 to 60 percent of the cost of frame relay networks," said Moon.
In addition to allowing general communications between the networks, the interface will also allow the networks to monitor each other.
"These partnerships will combine Westinghouse's world class technology and network management with the local presence of international vendors to deliver the same 'high-touch,' personalized level of service our U.S. and Canadian based clients expect," said Bob Struble, president, Westinghouse Communications
According to Tom Shimko, vice president, marketing: "This alliance will be a very positive step for both Westinghouse and its clients. The global communications market today is a function of the level of depth and commitment of worldwide partners. We have been utilizing Infonet for global services for over ten years and this agreement cements our commitment to supplying a seamless exceptional quality of services worldwide."
