Ph.Ds in English (and lots of other Ph. Ds) do just as much school and ultimately make a fraction of what a doctor makes. If they've gotten in it for the money and are not doing it for the love of it, they deserve whatever unhappiness they reap. If they've gotten in it for the love of medicine and treating people, then their ultimate salary is secondary. Sorry to preach.
