Something always happens to make voters disenchanted with the party in power. Look at how the Presidency has alternated since FDR died:

8 years of Dem. Truman
8 years of Rep. Eisenhower
8 years of Dem. Kennedy/Johnson
8 years of Rep. Nixon/Ford
4 years of Dem. Carter
12 years of Rep. Reagan/Bush 41
8 years of Dem. Clinton
8 years of Rep. Bush 43
? years of Dem. Obama

It took an unusually poor performance by Carter to break up the 8-year cycle.
