You mistake rationality for lack of empathy, sympathy and concern for public interest.
You are wrong that lack of regulation got us into this mess. The Fed, the banks, the Fannies, and a lot more besides are and were all regulated and THAT's what go us into the mess.
If you want regulation, state ownership and control, go for the USSR way of life. Or maybe the National Socialists of Germany. Or maybe Mao's Maelstrom. Or any number of other state authoritarians which all, without exception, failed spectacularly.
Producers make the wealth. The bludgers like to dispose of it.
Governments do have to protect the public assets such as air, water, spectrum, oceans, borders, but that's about it. They don't need to intercede with buyers and sellers, other than to punish fraud, breach of contract, and other criminality.
