Well, I don't have a figure to show total number of households in the world, nor do I know the total population...;). But here are some 1996 estimates.

US 163.1 million lines
Worldwide 729.5 million lines.

Definitely lots of copper no matter how you count it. What I was trying to say earlier is: we can't count on US not being the biggest market at least in the early years of deployment. And where there is no copper today I seriously doubt they will install copper. Figure the number would grow to over a billion copper lines by 2000. That's still a huge market left for DMT to compete in.
