Surgery training takes even longer .....

For me, it was

3 years of undergrad as a music major
(5 years as a professional musician)
3 more years of undergrad to finish B.A. and premed (I got a B.S. in genetics)
4 years of medical school
7 years of surgery residency (2 additional years in lab research)
4 years of fellowship in surgical oncology

===========

21 years, probably a world record. I should call Guinness'

I got 25K as a resident, up to 35K by the end of my fellowship
I obviously had to moonlight, I had over 125K in student loans by the time I started my "first job"

Then I worked my butt off for 10 years, and now I can take the time to be a professional musician again -
which is where I started !?!
