Trade, not armies "keep the world safe". Nope. Bush used the word "Freedom" for the same simplistic rationale. As long as there is pervasive religious extremism, in all flavors, Christian, Islam, Judaism, etc the sop of any"rational behaviour" stabilizer is at risk. We can skip merrily along, hoping that economic justice, or Freedom will keep things in balance, or we can prepare for the insanity wrought by folks convinced that their God is the only one and wanting to kill you to prove it. They have been with us for thousands of years and I am not aware of any evidence that things are changing much.
