<<Acer passed DELL as the number two notebook maker in market share in Q1>>
No surprise here. I bought an Acer 890-6306 laptop from Newegg.com this past December and it just destroys both of my Dell Laptops (1520 and 1737) in performance:

I would never buy another Dell again. Customer service is pathetic and vicious. Back in December, my grandson accidentally spilled a cup of diet orange soda on my desk destroying my Dell 1705 laptop. I had 3 year accidental coverage with Dell for this so I sent the laptop in for repair. After about 3 weeks, I went online, to check the status of my repair and was informed that my laptop did not exist anymore. When I called Dell's outsourced Tech support, I was told that my laptop was not made in the USA and was quickly transferred to Dell Tech support in France and then Canada. Whenever I called Dell's outsourced Tech support to inquire about the status of the repair, they just hung up on me like I was a piece of garbage. About a week later, a Dell 1737 studio laptop unexpectedly came from Fedex. My chip was upgraded from 2.0 Centrino to 2.4, my graphics card went from a Nvidia 8600 to a ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650 and more importantly, I now had an HDMI port.
I have the Dell 1737 laptop hooked up to a Samsung T240 HD via HDMI), which I use as a computer monitor and HDTV:

I only have nice things to say about this Samsung LCD HDTV. The display is gorgeous and thanks to this cheap "budget TV antenna" I bought from Radioshack, I now get 74 free over the air digital channels, many of which are in 1080i format:

Recently, I played a Blu-Ray movie and the display was magnificient. The slight problem I've had is whenever I instantly switch from computer monitor to HDTV and then back to computer monitor again, the Dell 1737 loses the signal and HDMI sound output goes silent. I only get the sound back (via HDMI) when I reboot or when the Dell 1737 and Samsung wake up from sleep mode. I know this is a Dell problem because I do not have this problem when I hook up my Acer 8930-6306 to the Samsung T240 HD.
The fact of the matter is that Dell makes an inferior laptop in comparison to Acer and Asus. |
