Rats are intermediate vectors of bubonic plague. You probably don't want to farm them. The ecological 'change over' of rats from Black rat to the Brown, Norway Rat in the middle ages did much to ameliorate the plague, as the Norway Rat does not transmit the oriental rat flea as efficiently as its smaller cousin.
