>>I don't think it will EVER become dated to believe that the government doesn't possess superior rights to an individual's wealth and productivity.<<

Two things to consider:

1) Society always comes first over individual rights. Tah has to be that way!!!

Our society necessarily must be a marriage of individual rights and liberty, and social needs and responsiblity.

That problem is by its very nature going to be messy and inprecise. Democracy is messy and imprecise.

So the only way to marry those two with some sense and logic is to have a hihgly educated populace that can understand the complexity involved and address it accordingly.

2) Nuclear war. Statisticians know that if the world continues to hold large quantities of nuclear weapons someone will use them. It is a statistical certainty. CERTAINTY!!!!

So what is the best way to prevent a nuclear holocaust? World cooperation is the only way. We cannot force Russia or China to disarm and they have as much to lose as we.

And we are faced with nuclear proliferation.

We need some big thinking not jingoistic catharthsis.

The right wings fear and lothing of the UN is quite simply intellectually trite.

Obama has a big teaching job ahead of him.
