Soda is an extremely bad beverage. It has, as far as I know, no redeeming value as a "food". If they labeled it "poison" and sold it, maybe that would be more fair- but of the many things that are taxed, "foods" that are likely to contribute to obesity, diabetes and tooth decay are an excellent target. There is often debate about what one should eat- but I think no one in the universe (outside of, perhaps, they lying schmucks who peddle candy to our kids) would say sodas and candy is good for you.
