In the final analysis it always seems to devolve to "Give me what I want or I'll blow you up".

Actually, it often comes down to "the strong do what they want, the weak suffer what they must".

But let's face some facts. Truly democratic countries do not attack one another. They negotiate and work things out. So their possession of nukes is not the problem. It's the rogue nations, controlled by despots and megalomaniacs that should worry us. And we have very little control over whether they obtain and/or use nukes, except to maintain a strong deterrent capability.
