We came real close to a nuclear war with Russia duringthe Cuban missle crises.

Yep.. and haven't come that close ever since.

And btw, we came that close because our Generals felt they possessed sufficient superiority that they could possess first strike destruction of the USSR with moderate casualties on our side.

In fact, we had our Jupiter nuclear missiles sitting in Turkey, just minutes away from nuking Moscow. The US literally had the ability to launch a pre-emptive strike, wipe out the Russian leadership, and potentially their missile silos, before they could actually fuel up their rockets and launch.

Supposedly that was part of the reason the Russians wanted missiles in Cuba, so they could have the same first strike decapitation capability.

Within months after the Cuban crisis, we removed our missiles from Turkey.

That doesn't get discussed very often since it tends to undermine the credibility of Kennedy's escalation of the crisis.

There's nothing more dangerous than disarming our nuclear retaliatory capability in the face of a determined totalitarian regime unaccountable to its own people.

So the nuclear deterrent will remain in place. That is, unless your Mr. Obama is stupid enough to actually unilaterally disarm.
