Toshiba eyes Chinese tie-up on DVD players

October 27, 1997

TOKYO, Oct. 24 (Kyodo) _ Toshiba Corp., a leading
Japanese electronics maker, is considering a linkup with China's largest home electronics
company on digital videodisk (DVD) players and other consumer electronics products, a
Toshiba official said Friday.

Toshiba and Sichuan Changhong Electronics Group Corp., based in Mianyang in
Sichuan Province, reached a basic agreement on comprehensive collaboration in August,
Toshiba spokesman Makoto Ueda said.

The two companies are discussing specific forms of cooperation but have yet to agree
on concrete steps, Ueda said.

He said the agreement requires top executives of the companies to meet regularly to
decide specific plans, with an aim of expanding business between the two and exploring
new areas of cooperation.

Toshiba currently supplies color television components to Sichuan Changhong, the
spokesman said.

The two companies are exploring possible cooperation over DVD players, audiovisual
equipment, washing machines, and refrigerators, among other options, he said.

Toshiba could transfer DVD technology and commission production and sales of DVD
players in China to Sichuan Changhong, according to Ueda.

Toshiba is said to be planning sales of DVD players in China within a year or so, though
a specific date is not set.

It started selling DVD players in Southeast Asia in summer after releasing them in Japan
in November last year.
