Frost warning issued for much of Saskatchewan

CBC News

With seeding well underway across Saskatchewan, a frost warning has been issued throughout the grain belt.

At 2:30 p.m. CT on Wednesday, Environment Canada issued frost warnings for 45 areas covering the southern two-thirds of the province.

The weather agency put the blame on a cold front that swept across southern Saskatchewan on Tuesday night, bringing unseasonably low temperatures.

Temperatures by Thursday morning will be at or slightly below 0 C in Regina, Saskatoon, Moose Jaw, Prince Albert, Swift Current and dozens of other communities, Environment Canada said.

That could be bad news for farmers who are in the middle of planting their crops.

In its May 14 crop report, the Saskatchewan Agriculture Ministry said 23 per cent of seeding was complete.

It's expected that when the next report comes out later this week, it will show more than a quarter of seeding is done.
