This whole setup, of dueling speeches between former VP Cheney and current POTUS Obama, lessens Obama. They are not supposed to be equals now. Obama is the man in office. Especially as Obama is playing a game of political Twister, trying to give something to both the Moveon.org crowd and the national security crowd as well, obfuscating the contradictions in a cloud of rhetoric, while Cheney can just say what he thinks, which he did decisively.

When Democrats protest that Presidents are not usually criticized so openly by former officials, they do have a small point. It would be a much larger point, however, if the Dems had not made so many noises about prosecuting Dick Cheney et. al. as war criminals. One is reminded of the Voltaire quote: Cet animal est bien mechant: quand on l'attaque, il se defend (that animal is really nasty: when he is attacked, he defends himself)
