Fascinating piece - the White House needs to emphasize these facts more, that no one was waterboarded for years under Bush-Cheney and no attacks resulted. More important, Brooks is really defining the splits in the intraparty Republican debate, between those stuck on the same old themes and those who want something new.

My question is, if Cheney felt so strongly about all this, why is he out there speaking everywhere now, after his party got their butts kicked at the polls, and he wasn't out on the stump every day last fall?

Because he was an integral part of a deeply unpopular administration whose policies were regarded as a failure by a majority of the electorate. If speaking up would have been a political liability then, what is his credibility now?

It's getting comical.
