No accounting for taste. I ended up spending an hour watching the linked pieces reviewing his career and learned things about him I hadn't previously known.
In there somewhere is a guy who relates how he bought one of his albums (the one with the trout head) and thought it was the worst album he had ever heard. After a few listens with no better result it occurred to him that as bad as it sounded the guy (Don) had intended for it to sound exactly as it did.
He listened a few more times with that in mind and it slowly began to grow on him. By the 8th or 9th listen he thought it was the greatest album he had ever heard (and still does). I've had similar experiences, some work is more accessible than others.
The group did not have any commercial success although the main guy went on to some success as a painter. I actually like this particular piece quite a lot and have one of his albums in the basement (not the one this song is from). That's quite a testament, actually, since I managed to drag very few possessions through some of the rougher periods of my life. And Zappa put up with him, so he couldn't have been all bad.
Something about no success like failure comes to mind again, with respect to this band. And as long as I'm being expansive, that was quite a good poem you threw out there. I truly am not a poet (as I will now prove), but a similar thing happened to me a couple of days ago and it's been running around in my head. I've found that something like this will get quite aggravating unless I tell someone, and Janet probably deserves a break, so you're it.
"If wishes were fishes, who would do dishes?"
As you can plainly see, Edward Lear has nothing to fear.
One last thing, the pictures associated with that video seem to be computer generated fractals, something I only recently discovered. Actually, Koan turned me on to them, and while our politics probably couldn't be further apart, I did learn something by keeping an open ear. (Good lesson to myself since I'm often pretty quick on the ignore).
Oh yeah, I missed The One giving his daily talk to the nation today due to watching Captain Beefheart, so I have further reason to cherish the experience.
Cheers.
