"And it's not just that I get a negative return on money that I make that is supposed to be saved for my retirement,.. You have no understanding of the SS system. SS is not and never was a "retirement" system. It is an intergenerational contract to help folks cope as they age and lose their earning capacity, hence Social Security. That was all it ever was supposed to be. The problem is folks haven't been taught what it is. By thinking of it as what it isn't, you get to the GOP brain fart that thinks it is "your money" or a savings account. This is another of the massive failures of education in this country.
