Not knowing K's circumstances in detail, I can only guess whether he had the means or opportunity to get out more and experience what he has always written about. But his career path is clear - from no FP background to a liberal speechwriter to an ardent neocon expert in a matter of years. That in itself is odd, to say the least.

Your friend and Hawking overcame their disabilities to show what they could go out and do anyway. They had their "boots on the ground" (or on stage or in the lab or wherever) in their chosen professions.

K is just another guy in the stands who never played the game, but claims to know better than the coaches and the QB put together. The world is full of them; not many get paid to write about it, however, for obvious reasons.
