So the KKK marcher attacked by an angry crowd of blacks is a victim of a hate crime?

If he is attacked for being a KKK member, sure. People aren't supposed to assault other people to begin with except in self-defense, so I have no sympathy for someone who not only crosses the line between law-abiding and assault, but then compounds it with a specific hate motive.

If everyone stuck to the limits of free speech to express their views, there wouldn't be a need for a hate crimes law in the first place, would there?
