New mine to give SA a $470m boost

A mineral sands development, tipped to be worth more than $470 million to the South Australian economy, has been given final approval.
Perth-based Iluka Resources will employ 110 people at the mine in SA's Eucla Basin.
It will produce 300,000 tones of zircon, 30,000 tonnes of rutile and 160,000 tonnes of ilmenite each year, key components in everyday products including ceramics and paint.
Acting Mineral Resources Minister Michael Wright said the new mine had met the highest environmental standards.
"Investment in the project will contribute more than $470 million to the state's economy, as well as providing royalties and export income for South Australia," Mr Wright said on Wednesday.
Mining operations at the site, about 200km from Ceduna, were scheduled to start in the first quarter of 2010 with production continuing for more than 10 years. |
