Duane << I suppose they could make history by paying people to borrow, say short term rates at -5%?>> or, more likely, they could begin to artificially raise the price of stocks as they did in October 1987 which in turn will begin to feed the greed monster again. let the games begin. frankly, this smells more political than economic regardless of your taste for politics. today was completely manufactured. average volume on all my issues with oscillation showing selling outweighing the buying by an insignificant margin on most of the issues i own, yet these same issues were dropping 10% 15% - on even 500 to 1000 share sales - if you wanted to sell today, the makers were letting you off at the lowest possible price which created further selling. the makers are given too much power in a free fall. thankfully they're given too much power when it moves in the opposite direction. this is one time when i'm thankful for those who shorted as now they will have the liquidity and the increased capital to bring the market back.
