The problem academics is the stake they have in what they have learned. They've put so much effort, time and money on that body of knowledge they have got, that they are terrified with the prospects that it becomes outdated or supplanted by another body of knowledge. Therefore they must do two things -at all times- be sure about they know is accepted as truth. Secod keep testing that against other mouthpieces' (caramba! I start using your jargon!- knowledge. Laymen, like me, learned everyhitng the cheapest way, thus if what I know is wrong, I dump it, and I lose little.
