I've threatened to move to WDC for a year several times. I really want to see more of the city and surrounding historical places.

There are many things I didn't like about living there - traffic and weather come to mind - but I am really grateful for having had the opportunity to spend 5 years living and working there. Some of the things that come to mind:

Lunch at the National Gallery;
Lunch at the National Portrait Gallery;
Strolling the mall at mid-day;
Riding my bike past the Iwo Jima Memorial;
Taking friends and family on tours that included the Lincoln, Jefferson and Viet Nam memorials;
Riding my bike on the C&O Canal path;
Lunch in the courtyard at the FBI building (try that now);
Working out at the DOJ gym;
Riding my bike in the Shennendoah Valley and Maryland Tobacco Country;
Lunch at the GAO (you're sensing lunch was an important ritual).

It was a wonderful place to be for a few years. We left because we didn't want to raise kids there.
