I think gun ownership was allowed by the Founders, because they realized if the British hadn't let them keep their guns, they'd still be British. They figured folks would have to get their guns out every now and then to put down home grown tyrannys.

What they had NO IDEA of was that weapons of war would advance way past rifles and pistols. Rendering rifles and pistols pretty much useless for the founders intended purpose. If the "original intent" were strictly followed, we'll all be able to own nuclear weapons.

The second amendment is a perfect example of where the Founders DIDN'T see the unintended consequences in the future. Where "strict interpretation" fails.
