""A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State" would not be necessary if you're correct."

If you read "The Federalist Papers", you learn that the basic idea was that by using militias they could raise a large army quickly making any invasion virtually impossible. As a byproduct, a standing army would be unnecessary. Unfortunately, as they found out, this idea didn't work so well. It might be viable for an invasion, certainly better than nothing, but the militias proved to be undisciplined and had a tendency to desert when the opportunity presented itself. So they scrapped the idea of using militias for anything.
