SilentZ linked to an article showing that the cost of prisons have exploded in the past decade, partly due to rising number of inmates, partly due to overly generous benefits to the prison guard unions.

There are also a ton of regulatory agencies that have lots of redundancy and overlap. Most of them avoid reform because of bureaucratic politics.

Education and health costs are whole separate beasts on their own. I'd argue for more of the former and less of the latter, but that's just me.

Using the words you use to describe the situation........you have a way of demonizing anyone who works for the gov't. That makes it very easy for you to believe you are getting ripped off. You should work in gov't for six months......I suspect it would be a real eye opener for you.
