I think church tithes being deductible is dangerously close to a violation of the Establishment clause of the Constitution because religious groups receive exemptions for all sorts of things (like property tax) that secular groups do not receive

I don't have a problem with the tax deductibility of charitable gifts, which includes tithes, but I view the giving of federal monies to religious organizations as incredibly problemmatic. I was surprised when Obama and other Dems supported this notion as it seems to me to be something that would really blur the strict separation of church and state.

I'm actually against this tax exempt status for churches for a number of reasons, both pragmatic and legal. IMO, they should have open financial books like any other non-profit corporation is required to carry.

Open to whom? As far as I know, the financial books of any PRIVATE corporation, whether profit or non-profit, church or mercantile, don't have to be open to public viewing....only public corporations do. And I believe the federal govt. has the authority in this country to force open the books of any private corporation, including churches.
