Those things, or at least the perception of judges taking sides in those matters, damaged the credibility of the Supremes to be seen as making supremely unbiased judgements. That was my point.

To the extent they earn a reputation of partisan favoritism, it damages their reputations. It may bolster their popularity in the short term but as circumstances change, which they inevitably will do, confidence in their rulings will suffer. That confidence is the basis of their power. Their honor is founded upon the principles of liberty and justice for all, which is codefied in the constitution they are sworn to uphold.
