Automatic AK-47s where heavily controlled before Bush and after him.

A ban on Semi-auto weapons that look the same as the full auto version, but aren't any deadlier than many hunting rifles (at long range they are less deadly than hunting rifles, at short range they are less deadly than shotguns, in between their a decent weapon but nothing special, fairly reliable, but not esp. accurate and operating with one shot for each trigger pull just like many unbanned weapons), was lifted at that time.

You conflate full auto AKs with semi-auto versions, but they are not the same. Semi-auto AKs aren't particularly good weapons for criminals. They have no special level of firepower. They are less accurate than most decent rifles and less powerful than many of them, they aren't concealable like pistols or sawed off shotguns, and they are more distinctive looking than many weapons which is at least a mild disadvantage.

The only reason to ban them is that they "look scary". Its nothing to do with the capabilities or use of the weapon, its all about cosmetics, and with trying to confuse people so that they will think full-auto weapons are the issue in the debate.
