God knows I hope you're right but I have heard some contrary rumblings out of Chu and gang.

To the defense of Bush on this one issue at least, the shale NG is a very very recent development. Around 2001 I believe they began to work seriously on the Barnett which is actually now a pretty mature play.

But they were shooting blind so to speak. All of these horizontal drilling techniques had to be developed from scratch and then adapted to the peculiarities of each shale play.

And so it is really only in the last few years that they have started to get an idea as how cheap it can be to extract this shale NG. In addition they just keep discovering more of this shale NG in what seems like an exponential fashion. They have been hitting gusher after gusher in both the Haynesville and the Marcellus. Already 2007 seems like ancient history in shale gas terms.

What I see as a real danger under this administration is that this NG ace in the hole card gets ignored while everybody obsesses about political in fighting and spends all their time arguing violently about other issues.

And if not ignored, then this fledgling shale gas industry could well be taxed and regulated to death.

One other thing I see around is some sort of belief that we are going to have to live like cave men with a severe energy austerity program. Well energy conservation is necessary and important, but I will bet that if done right this shale NG can be used to give us all a quite comfortable life style-from an energy standpoint at least.
