In a corrupt country do not try to act local or pass as clever.
Treat the authority as you treat the authority at home.
Do not think yourself as clever.

I look at it like this:
When I am wrong. I am wrong anywhere. I am liable. If I am liable, I am liable.

I mentalize, in Brazil, would cost 5 points in my drivers' license plus BRL200. Here is costing USD100.
Even knowing that if it was a local he would not have stopped. By I was liable.

The corrupt policeman wants authority to be recognized. He is powerless. But he is a predator who smells in the air your reactions.

Say I get pulled over. I wait him to appproach. Only when he arrives I lower the volume of the radio. I greet him first in English. If the policeman does not speak English, I try my best in the local language.

I have sent two good signs. By lowering the volume of the radio, I showed respect. Second I do not want him to feel embarassed by not knowing English.

"You were over speeding." If I say no, I am calling him a lier. If I say yes I admit the blame. I tell a credible story.

"Perhaps, I was, but to be honest with you, I was not looking carefully in the last ten Km or so, as I am hungry looking for a place to eat. Perhaps I did not concentrated too much."
Vague enough. Do not touch the point of overspeeding.

He asks for the papers I give the papers. This gives him time to pounder the quality of my story. Usually they let me go with a warning and they even say, he has got more people own the road, so I should be careful. I ask for te next place for food, he tells me and I say. Iam going to be very much concentrated henceforth.
