Vans is going to get a big lift in sales from Japan. I own it and have been keeping my eye on the fickle and fadish Japanese youth market while living in Tokyo. I've noticed a few more places selling Vans and a few more kids wearing them over the last year. Not a lot, but a positive trend. Then something major happened. Last week the number one pop star and trend setter, Amaru, announced to her legion of fans that she is pregnant and married the father of the child. Young kids went wild (Amaru is 20). Sunday she left Japan for New York. A legion of reporters followed her through the airport. She was wearing a pair of Vans. For the past two days I have watched Japanese television as commentators hold up the same style of Vans that she was wearing. Usually, whatever style she employs is instantly followed by thousands of young people. Let's hope that Vans is prepared for what will be an onslaugh here.
