Dear Susumu,
Lee Kulas' stated in a shareholder's letter dated July 16, 1997 that his motivation to join Medical Discoveries was based upon the careful assessment of the core technology of MDI-P, it's potential application and, most importantly, the potential therapeutic benefits that this technology may offer to mankind. Through his experience in the Japanese medical market place he became aware of "Function Water" which is "similar" to MDI-P. How this "similarity" will translate in terms of patent protection both for Japan and the USA remains to be seen at this point in time.
Japan's enthusiasm for electrically hydrolized saline or "Function Water" is broad based and extends to the medical community, private industry, and as you mentioned -- the Japanese government itself. To quote Lee Kulas: "Clearly, the acceptance and understanding of this technology in the second largest international medical market-place, (Japan) should only have positive implications for Medical Discoveries and our ongoing development programs and future global plans." As you mentioned, the Japanese government has established a special organization, "The Function Water Foundation," to study the application for this technology. Japan currently has as many as 35 companies developing products to make available the benefits of "Function Water" for a wide variety of applications. Kulas sees the activity in Japan as an excellent opportunity to develope key relationships that will enhance "understanding" and development of these technologies as Medical Discoveries prepares to enter world-wide markets in the future.
Shouji Kubota, Ph.D., whose reputation is well established and respected, was appointed by Medical Discoveries to head up the Scientific Research and Development program in Japan. Dr. Kubota has published an authoritative text on "Function Water," and is currently the president of The Society for the Study of Water Design, which was established in 1987 for the purpose of investigating and developing the potential and future applications of Function Water. Dr. Kubota was previously with the Hitachi Institute of Hitachi Seisakusyo, where he had a distinquished 25 year career. He is also Adjuct Professor in the Engineering Department at Ibaragi University, and serves as vice-president of the Society of Subtle Energy Institute. I am personally really, extremely, extensively, exhuberantly (!) excited about Dr. Kubota's appointment to Medical Discoveries.
Dr. Kubota also chairs the Japanese Chapter of Medical Discoveries Scientific Advisory Board, that also includes Dr. Akito Ohmura, MD, Professor of Anesthesiology at Teikyo University School of Medicine, Tokyo; and Dr. Asashi Kitamoto, Ph.D., Associate Professor of the Atomic Energy Department of Tokyo Industrial University. Both of these docs have distinquished themselves in the fields of medicine and engineering, and will, under Dr. Kubota's guidance, assist the company in an advisory capacity as Medical Discoveries makes preparations to file scientific and regulatory applications in Japan.
While I still advise shareholders and potential shareholders to view Medical Discoveries as speculative, I am personally very excited about the potential of MDI-P and am more than thrilled with their current management and advisory appointments. The potential for MDI-P as being the next new generation rapid acting therapeutic anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-viral is very real, and I am looking forward to the day when these dreams are brought to fruition.
I personally feel very confident that Medical Discoveries will meet the challenges that they will be faced with in commercializating MDI-P, but beings how they are in a highly competitive industry, where the flow of information must be controlled in order that competitors are not given an unfair advantage -- their secrets, plans, and strategies for doing this will more than likely not be divulged. You may want to call Marlin Toombs and request an investor's package for more information.
Best wishes, and thankyou much for your thoughtful post.
