I'm not sure what "function" will be served when the worker-to-retiree ratio reaches 2:1. The productive members of society will be increasingly depended upon to support the non-productive members.

The correct solution would have been to increase the retirement age proportionally with increases to life expectancy, but that will never happen until SS runs deficits. Even then, those in power will favor raising taxes, such as Obama's promise to raise taxes on income above $250K by a huge amount. That will have severe unintended consequences.
