The message I got was there was a time when the Republican party was exclusive and in their minds closed to Jews. For instance, I can think of private clubs that were closed to them - hence all the small Jewish businesses and professionals?

Not just the clubs, whole industries and professions were closed to Jews. I had a relative who came from Europe in the 1940s as a trained aeronautical engineer. He had to found a small business because he could not get hired anywhere.

I think the problem is an understanding of what the Republican party is - or is going to be. It seems to me that the big whig money is now Democrat. Perhaps the excluders are now to be found elsewhere.

Even more so, the problem is not understanding what the Democrats now are, how unliberal the party has become in any traditional meaning of the word 'liberal'.

This is where discussion of affirmative action relativist judging will help. Jews have never liked affirmative action, rightly understanding that it was a quota system that pretended not to be a quota system, and that they, who had suffered from negative quotas, were not going to benefit from the positive quotas. The more we can make clear how deeply rooted identity politics and quota systems are in the Democratic Party, the more Jews may say, "I don't like this, enough already."
