I assume when you say he was willing to sacrifice 100's of thousands of his own people you are talking about the Iran war...

Roughly 1 million died in that war. There are also hundreds of thousands of mass graves in Iraq. Then there are the excess deaths (possibly around 50K per yr) due to Saddam starving the Iraqi health system of medicine during the sanctions era.
