In a few months the personal savings rate erased 14 years of declines, in the midst of rapidly falling income. You can't ignore that.

Government deficits are more than making up for it, as you correctly observe, but government deficits have a way of disappearing quickly, if the politicians are forced, as I think they will. Remember the Clinton years.
