Agreed. However, you don't invest that kind of money and not see massive technological innovation. They will experience first hand the economies of scale and tech innovation that will drive the cost of renewables to cost competitiveness with coal. Then it will become cheaper. They may reach that stage before we do, and when they do, they will start exporting their tech all over the world for a profit, leaving us to try to catch up. The renewable energy industry has the capacity to be a multi-trillion dollar industry and the ones who capture the lead on it will be the ones who will have the most prosperous economies in the future, which translates directly into military and diplomatic power. Do we really want to give up that lead to China? Maybe it's already inevitable, but I'd like to think we still have a fighting chance. However, we have to get focused fast and stay focused for a long time to come.
