Empathy should never have even been a matter for discussion!! It should have been a truism that the best judges have empathy. Empathy is the most important trait mankind has. And given mankinds otherside, of meaness and insensitity e.g. war and slavery and racism all the more reason to value empathy. I am a liberal because watching politics for 40 years it is clear the liberals are the most empathetic e.g. "bleeding Hear Liberal". Ayone that thinks being a bleeding heart liberal is a bad thing, is stupid or sick. PS: and having compassion does not mean one is weak. It takes more guts to be compassionate than a bully like Bush and Cheney are. >> It was the right wing that keeps saying NO empathy No it isn't. Just about no one is saying such a thing. There is a big distance between saying the job of a judge should be about what the law actually says, and saying that people in general, or just judges, should have, or display no empathy. No empathy or sympathy at all would be sociopathic. But just about no one is calling for that.<,
