The attributions are getting a little confusing here. Glenn didn't originate the "bow to dictator" thing, that was greenspirit recycling a pet rant of the right from a constantly recycled youtube thing in Saudi Arabia. Glenn's point seems to be pure realpolitik, that instability in Egypt is not something particularly desirable at this point in time. I think this is a valid point, though at odds with our professed democratic ideals. Mubarek has been in power forever, he's got to be considered the consummate mideast survivor at this point.

A little background, just off the top of my head: I believe Egypt is the original home of the Muslim Brotherhood, which in turn could probably be considered the parent ( or maybe great - grandparent ) of the modern Islamist political movement. The Muslim Brotherhood has always been ruthlessly repressed in Egypt. By way of contrast, in another mideast country somewhat favored by the US, Jordan has a long history of tolerance toward that organization. Jordan of course has its own issues and problems, but it doesn't seem to suffer powderkeg overtones sometimes seen in Egypt. Of course, on the powderkeg front Egypt is at most a distant second to Pakistan perception wise.
