Being able to tell what works and what doesn't is one of modern medicine's true claims to glory. What antibiotics work best in most cases for community acquired pneumonia? Are results of coronary stenting clearly superior to medical treatment - or not? There are hundreds of trials and comparison going on all the time. The information evolves slowly, and the field keeps changing, but still - the results tend to be "cleaned up" of unrelated influences, the methodology of the studies is always disclosed and openly discussed, results tend to be reproducible when repeated by others. All this is an ongoing process, but for the most part the data that emerges is solid - unlike great numbers of claims out there which are not supported by properly designed studies.
