The Elm Grove police officer who was seriously injured trying to rescue a 2-year-old boy from a minivan moments before it was hit by a train, has had surgery for the fifth time.

Officer John Krahn has been at Froedtert Hospital with severe injuries since Memorial Day.

Krahn is in need of various degrees of physical therapy to ensure a full recovery.

Though he has shown improvement, his expected date of discharge from the hospital has not been determined.

The 2-year-old's father, who also was injured in the collision, has been moved out of intensive care and been upgraded to serious condition.
